I Had Zero Tech Skills. This Is How I Started Making Money with AI Anyway.

No coding, no degree, no experience – just curiosity and an old laptop I used only for binge-watching.

Two years ago, I was working part-time in a supermarket, trying to scrape some extra money, when one day, while looking through Twitter, I heard people mentioning “Making money with AI”. The immediate thought that popped into my mind was to roll my eyes. Another drop-shipping scheme promising fast money to its students.

However, as I found myself with fewer hours of work due to staff reduction, my landlord reminded me again about the rent to pay next week. So I decided – what is the worst thing that might happen to me if I actually try?

As surprising as it may sound, it was “nothing” that made me understand what was going on! Yes, I looked like a fool when I tried walking. As a beginner, I have made a lot of mistakes, but these mistakes are covered by my betterment. However, the result was that I was ready to quit my second job.

Why having no experience is actually less of a problem than you imagine:

The key fact here: most of the tools currently on the market are designed for non-techies. The whole idea behind the product.s is the promise to be accessible without learning to code, training models, etc. The truth, however, lies deeper.

Using AI technology correctly means being able to produce content and analyze results to sell them to your audience. The issue here is that those without any technological skills usually tend to spend a lot of their time discovering how the software works and not using it for productive work.

We can say that :

Artificial intelligence can be described as a productivity tool that enhances your capability, effectiveness, and attractiveness to potential employers.
But it does not mean that they can do everything without producing valuable results for the company.

The methods I’ve used (and the ones that worked for my peers):

1-Content writing services:

This has been my initial step in making money with AI technology. I knew how to write quite well – nothing extraordinary, just a decent writing skill that could allow me to complete orders online.

Thus, I started to place offers on platforms like Fiverr and Upwork, but, instead of spending hours writing my articles, I used ChatGPT to write them for me within minutes. I simply asked the customer what kind of content they needed, suggested 3 angles to consider, selected one, and wrote the article based on it. The result is always mine because the initial text provided by ChatGPT is flat and boring.

With this approach, within 2 months, I completed 4-6 articles per week for $60-$120 per piece. Nothing extraordinary, yet real.

2-Social Media management services for local businesses:

One of the problems I faced is that many local businesses require social media management, but do not have any time to deal with this task themselves. Usually, they upload low-quality pictures once a month and wonder why this social medium does not bring them followers. Therefore, I suggested a simple solution. A monthly plan containing 12 posts with captions and hashtags costing $300-$500 per client.

Tools such as Canva and Claude allow completing tasks of this kind quickly. Actually, it takes me only 3-4 hours per client per month. As soon as they agree to this arrangement, you have a passive source of income for the period until their contract expires.

Finding the first customers was the hardest part. It took me to message at least 40 local businesses through Instagram. But it was worth my time.

3-AI-generated digital products:

I did not expect this option at all. People start to generate their own ebooks, prompt collections, templates, and planners, and sell them through sites such as Gumroad, Etsy, and Payhive.

Basically, they need to choose a very narrow niche where they can solve. For example, I created a “Mindset Journal for Freelancers” using Claude to structure the text and Canva to design the pages. I worked a weekend on this product and put it on Gumroad for $9.So far, it has earned some hundreds of dollars.

4-Prompt engineering as a service:

It sounds pretty high-level, but it is not. Local businesses use AI in their operations, but have mediocre results because no one cares about writing proper prompts to receive the best results. Thus, they need an expert to look at their prompts, optimize them for better performance, and provide a prompt collection for their teams.

As a rule, such projects cost $150-$300 and take some 3-4 hours of work. However, the ROI of this project is obvious.

5. AI-assisted video scripts and YouTube research:

YouTubers — especially ones doing educational or business content — need a constant stream of ideas, scripts, and research. Many of them hate the writing side. I found a few clients through creator communities who paid me monthly to handle their scripting pipeline using AI + my own research and editing. Rates vary a lot, but $500–$1500/month per channel is reasonable once you have samples.

The tools I actually use:

1-hatGPT/Claude:

Writing, researching, outlining, editing, and prompt writing

2-Gumroad / Etsy:
Selling digital products without a custom website
3-Fiverr / Upwork:
Finding first freelance clients in writing, content, and VA work
4-Notion /Organizer:
Organizing client work and drafts in one place
5-Buffer / Later:
Scheduling social content for clients automatically

How to actually start — step by step:

pexels freestockpro 9822733 1 e1777480001447

1-Pick one method and only one: Seriously. Most people fail at this because they try to do content AND digital products AND YouTube all at once. Choose the one where you can utilize your existing skills, even those at a very basic level.
2- Experiment with the platform for a week by engaging in writing-related activities through ChatGPT/Claude daily. Utilize their assistance to write something, explain something, and rewrite something. Understand the way it operates well before you begin selling anything.
3-Make two or three different examples: One example for a blog post, one for a social media package for a fictitious company, and an example for the introduction of an e-book. Something to show when people ask, “Can I see your work?”

4- Offer at a low price to get your first client: Don’t undervalue yourself long-term, but getting that first real client — even at a discount — builds confidence and gives you a testimonial. One solid review is worth more than a perfect portfolio.

5- Raise your prices after three clients: Once you have proof that you can deliver, charge more. Most beginners raise prices too slowly. The market will tell you if you’ve gone too far.
6-Set aside 10% of your time for education about your artificial intelligence (AI) technology: technology changes very quickly, and what works today will likely be outdated after six months.

Mistakes that you should avoid:

1-Posting AI output without editing:

I did this early on, and the client noticed immediately. AI writing is often correct but lifeless. The editing pass is what makes it yours and makes it good.

2-Picking a niche that was too broad:

“Content writing for businesses” is a category, not a niche. “Blog posts for SaaS companies” or “Instagram captions for fitness coaches” is a niche. Specific beats general every time on freelance platforms.

3-Building a website before getting clients:

I spent three weeks building a portfolio site before I had a single client or testimonial to put on it. That time would have been better spent pitching. Get clients first, build the website later.

4-Too early to be chasing the dream of “passive income”:

Digital products are real, but they work better when you already have an audience or traffic source. Starting with service work builds cash flow faster and teaches you what people actually want to buy.

What about that “robots/AI will steal all our jobs”?

That’s something I’m asked very often. My honest take: AI is replacing certain tasks, not certain people — at least not yet, and probably not in the way most people imagine. The individuals who are doing well currently are those who know how to leverage AI technology to work for them rather than against them.

Ironically enough, because artificial intelligence can churn out low-quality content in bulk, good content, which means thoughtfully placed content edited by humans, has become increasingly more valuable. Businesses are swimming in AI slop and paying more for quality than they were three years ago.

That might change. But for now, there’s a real window.

Realistic expectations: what you can actually earn:

It drives me crazy when people toss around numbers about making money online without any explanation behind those numbers, so here is an honest estimate:

1- Month 1-2:

0-300.$ Getting to know the software, prototyping, and landing your first client.

2-Month 3–4:

$300–$1,000. Two or three clients, or a digital product getting traction.

3-Month 6+:

$1,500–$4,000+. Consistent work, referrals starting to come in, and raised rates. Those ranges assume you’re putting in real hours — not dabbling for 20 minutes a day. People who do it for real seem to approach it as an additional job, at least initially.

conclusion:

I wish someone had told me this when I was starting.”

You do not need authorization, certification, or qualifications to get started.” You need a specific service, a specific type of client, and the patience to be bad at it for a few weeks before you get good.
